Two siblings drowned while bathing in a waterbody connected to a canal near the Turag River in Tongi of Gazipur on Sunday noon.
The incident occurred around noon on October 11 in an area adjacent to Bakral village under Tongi West Police Station.
The deceased were Sumaiya, 8, and her younger brother Abdullah, 6, children of Rabbi Sheikh and Rabeya from Gachhani village in Dashmina upazila of Patuakhali. They lived with their family in a rented house owned by a person named Masum in Bakral village, Ward No. 52 of Tongi West.
According to police and local sources, the two siblings went to bathe in the waterbody near the canal, along with another child, around 12:30 PM. At one point, all three children got into trouble due to the water current. While one child managed to swim to safety, Sumaiya and Abdullah went underwater.
The child who survived alerted local residents and the victims' family members. Relatives and locals rushed to the scene and began rescue efforts. The two siblings were recovered around 3pm, but they had already died.
A team from Tongi West Police Station arrived at the scene around 5:40 PM and prepared inquest reports on the bodies. The bodies were later sent to Tongi General Hospital to determine the exact cause of death.
Officer-in-Charge of Tongi West Police Station Arif Hossain said, "the bodies were handed over to the family without autopsies after the necessary legal procedures, as the family had no objection."
