Russia struck at least six Ukrainian energy facilities despite US President Donald Trump’s announcement of an energy ceasefire between Moscow and Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday (October 12).
The overnight attacks hit energy infrastructure in Kyiv and Kharkiv, causing power outages and casualties. Targets included a gas production facility and a power plant, according to Ukrainian officials.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine was ready to halt attacks on Russian energy infrastructure if Moscow stopped targeting Ukrainian facilities. However, Russia had not confirmed accepting the proposed truce, leaving its status uncertain.
Meanwhile, the European Union imposed sanctions on nearly 1,600 Russian individuals and entities linked to the country’s military industry, including suppliers of components used in drones and missiles.
The latest developments have cast doubt on prospects for an energy truce as the war continues to disrupt civilian infrastructure.
