The National Citizen Party (NCP) has condemned the alleged harassment of former interim government Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport, demanding legal proceedings against the Awami League as an organisation.
In separate statements on Tuesday, the party and its leader Nahid Islam, Opposition Chief Whip in Parliament, called for the identification and prosecution of those involved, describing the incident as an example of the Awami League’s alleged politics of intimidation.
In a statement signed by NCP office cell member Sadia Farzana Dinar, the party cited video footage and media reports identifying Imdad Chowdhury, general secretary of the New York Metropolitan Awami League, and Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury, general secretary of the US Jubo League, among those involved.
Calling the alleged harassment of a former head of government on foreign soil an “anti-state terrorist activity”, the NCP accused the Awami League of targeting prominent Bangladeshis abroad after losing its ability to operate in the country following the July uprising.
The party demanded that those involved be identified through video footage, eyewitness accounts and other evidence, and that legal action be taken against the named leaders. It also warned that reconciliation without accountability would undermine efforts to establish justice.
In a Facebook post, Nahid Islam accused Awami League activists of continuing a pattern of violent politics without remorse for past actions.
“This terrorist network, active both at home and abroad, must be completely thwarted,” he wrote, calling for the completion of trials involving those accused of the July genocide, enforced disappearances and killings under the previous regime, followed by the execution of verdicts.
“Furthermore, the Awami League must immediately be put on trial as an organisation for genocide and terrorism,” he demanded.
