Afghanistan frustrated Bangladesh with a remarkable draw in the Test match after a determined batting effort on the final day, despite the hosts needing just seven wickets to secure victory.
Afghanistan resumed the fifth day on 132 for three, with the visitors focused on batting out the day. Openers Sedikullah Atal and Hashmatullah Shahidi negotiated the early overs carefully as Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto tried several bowling changes without immediate success.
Bangladesh’s spinners struggled to make the most of the cracks on the Abu Dhabi pitch, which remained largely favourable to batting. The extreme heat also took its toll, forcing Shahidi to retire hurt during the first session after scoring 20 off 33 balls.
Bangladesh finally broke through shortly before lunch in the 78th over. Ebadot Hossain bowled a short delivery outside leg stump, and Ikram Alikhil attempted a pull shot. The ball took the outside edge, allowing wicketkeeper Litton Das to dive to his right and complete the catch. Alikhil scored 33 off 69 balls.
Atal continued to hold the innings together as Afghanistan built another 40-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Ismat Alam. Mehidy Hasan Miraz ended the stand when Shanto caught Ismat, who scored four off 60 balls.
Shahidi returned to bat after retiring hurt but fell to Miraz, with Hasan Mahmud taking the catch. The Afghanistan captain made 36 off 69 balls.
Atal, meanwhile, reached his maiden Test century and continued batting deep into the innings. He eventually departed after scoring 111 off 332 balls, hitting nine fours and three sixes.
Despite Bangladesh’s breakthroughs, the visitors’ lower-order resistance proved decisive. Yamin Ahmadzai and Qais Ahmad batted resolutely to help Afghanistan secure the draw and deny Bangladesh victory.
Ebadot Hossain and Mehidy Hasan Miraz took three wickets each for Bangladesh, while Hasan Mahmud and Nayeem Hasan claimed one apiece.
