The Saudi-led military coalition is preparing a major airstrike in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, which is controlled by Iran-backed Houthi rebels, and has urged civilians to leave a targeted oil facility.
Coalition spokesperson Turki Al-Maliki said on Tuesday that civilians would soon be instructed to evacuate the area ahead of a special military operation.
Shortly afterwards, he issued the evacuation warning and shared a map on social media platform X showing a facility in Yemen.
The coalition urged civilians to leave the Yemen Oil Company’s Al-Sabah central station in Sanaa and move to a safe place for their own protection.
In an earlier post, Al-Maliki said the coalition would conduct a special operation in the capital and was taking steps to allow civilians to evacuate beforehand.
The Houthis responded with a counter-threat. Yahya Saree, spokesperson for the group’s military wing, said any attack on Yemen’s capital would prompt retaliation against Riyadh, the Saudi capital.
He warned that the response would be harsh and painful.
Direct clashes between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia have escalated in recent days. On Saturday, a missile attack on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport reportedly killed 12 people and injured more than 300.
Saudi Arabia has since threatened tougher action against the Houthis.
