FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing scrutiny after reportedly receiving $1.72 million from the organisation responsible for the 2026 World Cup, a payment not disclosed in FIFA's 2024 annual report.

According to ESPN, citing FIFA and US Internal Revenue Service records, Infantino received the money from FWC2026, a US-based entity established to organise the tournament, in addition to approximately $4.9 million in salary and benefits from FIFA in 2024.

The report raised questions about FIFA's financial transparency, as its regulations require public disclosure of the remuneration of the president and other senior officials.

FIFA has denied any wrongdoing, saying it does not pay its president a second salary and complies with all disclosure requirements. It also said its accounts are independently audited and financial declarations follow applicable tax laws.

Infantino has led FIFA since 2016 and has faced criticism over other World Cup-related proposals, including a plan to sell a 20 per cent stake in the tournament to private investors, which was later scrapped.
