Readymade garment workers from several factories blocked roads in Azampur area of Uttara in the capital on Thursday, demanding payment of outstanding wages, higher salaries and other benefits, causing severe traffic congestion during the morning rush hour.
Workers from six to eight garment factories began demonstrating and blocking the road around 10AM, said Mohammad Rezaul Karim, deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Uttara Division.
Additional police personnel have been deployed to the area to maintain order, while traffic congestion has spread to surrounding roads, disrupting commuters travelling to different destinations.
The protesting workers said rising prices of essential commodities had made it increasingly difficult to make ends meet on their current wages. They alleged that repeated appeals to the relevant authorities for payment of arrears and resolution of their demands had gone unanswered, leaving them with no option but to take to the streets.
Industrial police and local police were at the scene holding discussions with the workers in an effort to bring the situation under control and restore normal traffic movement.
However, as of the latest report, the protesters had not withdrawn from the road.
In a separate incident on Wednesday, garment workers blocked the road at the Airport Roundabout around noon, demanding that the minimum monthly wage be raised to Tk 30,000.
