Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused US President Donald Trump of betrayal over a new deal to buy energy from Russia, calling it an easy victory for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Asked by British media personality Piers Morgan whether he considered the Trump administration’s actions a betrayal, Zelensky replied, “Yes.” The interview aired on YouTube’s Piers Morgan Uncensored on Wednesday.
“It is sad that we are losing a strong partner,” Zelensky said.
Last week, Trump announced that Putin had agreed to supply Russian diesel to various markets. Trump is seeking to lower fuel prices ahead of the US midterm elections. The move has drawn criticism from both major US political parties and angered European allies.
Russian forces launched fresh attacks on Ukraine just hours after Trump announced an “energy ceasefire” on Monday. However, neither Moscow nor Kyiv publicly confirmed the ceasefire.
In an excerpt of the interview shared on X, Zelensky said, “It is our country, our bodies, our homes, our children. So, when Trump chooses one side, it hurts.”
He added that Trump should remain neutral rather than side with the wrong party. Zelensky also claimed that Russia wanted Trump to remain weak and did not care about US elections.
Kyiv fears that closer energy ties between Moscow and Washington could weaken US support for Ukraine.
