In Narail, the District Detective Branch (DB) of police and the Cyber Crime Investigation Unit have arrested two members of an online fraud ring.

The arrested individuals had been defrauding people by creating various Facebook pages and posting enticing advertisements, luring victims with the promise of low-priced products. During the operation, authorities seized three mobile phones used in the scams, along with Tk. 82,810 that had been swindled from victims.

This information was shared in a press release issued by the Narail District Police Media Cell on Thursday afternoon (October 15).

The arrested individuals are Md. Mortaza, 27, son of Obaidullah from Pateshwari Dakshinpara in Kalia Upazila, Narail, and Md. Limon Molla, 27, son of Kamal Molla from Narayanpur village in the same Upazila. Limon Molla facilitated the fraud by acting as a 'bKash' agent.

According to police sources, Mortaza and Limon created several fake Facebook pages, such as "Baby Bike Shop BD," "Baby Bike," "Kolom Packaging Chakrir Dak 2.0," "Mishoriyo Murgi Sell Bazar 2.0," and "Kombol.BD", to post attractive advertisements. They would entice customers with offers of low-priced goods to extract money from them.

A victim who fell prey to this scheme filed a complaint with the Narail Superintendent of Police (SP), Mohammad Al Mamun Shikdar. Acting on the SP’s instructions, a joint team from the District Detective Branch (DB) and the Cyber Crime Investigation Unit launched an operation to identify and apprehend the fraudsters. Following this, the suspects were arrested around 2:30 AM last Wednesday (October 14) with the assistance of information technology.

The operation was carried out under the supervision of Md. Alauddin, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Narail District Detective Branch (DB), and the in-charge of the Cyber Crime Investigation Unit. Under the supervision of Abdul Khalek, a police team, comprising Sub-Inspectors (SI) Rajesh Kumar Das, Prosenjit Ghosh, and Rakibul Hasan—conducted the operation.

Three mobile phones used for the fraudulent activities, along with Tk. 82,810, money obtained through these scams, were seized from the possession of the arrested individuals. It was during the interrogation where they revealed their modus operandi: by creating online pages under various aliases and posting enticing advertisements, they extracted money from buyers they have deceived. The two arrested individuals have been produced before the court. The district police stated that their operations to identify and apprehend others involved in such online fraud are ongoing.
