Thailand plans to recruit BD workers

Thailand is planning to recruit workers from Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka to address labour shortages in its agriculture and construction sectors, potentially opening up a new overseas employment market for Bangladeshi workers.

The plan was outlined in an update on Thailand’s labour policy on October 13, according to a report published by Bangladeshi media.

Persistent labour shortages in agriculture and construction have disrupted production and development activities in Thailand, prompting the government to explore new sources of foreign workers beyond its traditional labour markets.

Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka are being considered as potential sources of workers, although no recruitment quota or target has yet been finalised.

Preliminary preparations are reportedly underway, with the first batch of Sri Lankan workers potentially travelling to Thailand by January 2027, subject to the completion of necessary arrangements. Recruitment from Bangladesh and Nepal could follow.

If implemented, the initiative could give Bangladeshi workers access to employment opportunities beyond traditional destinations in the Middle East, particularly in agriculture and construction.

However, the recruitment schedule, number of workers, salary structure, visa requirements and application procedures remain undecided.

Prospective workers have been advised to remain cautious about individuals or agencies demanding money in exchange for jobs under the proposed programme until Thai authorities make an official announcement.

The initiative could help Bangladesh diversify its overseas labour market, but the benefits will depend on the final recruitment arrangements and the terms offered to workers.
