Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said equality, human dignity and social justice are central to all religions, while the welfare of humanity is one of their fundamental teachings.
He stressed that alongside practising their respective religious beliefs and cultures, everyone must maintain mutual respect, dignity and compassion to preserve peace in society.
The Prime Minister made the remarks in a message issued today ahead of Sharadiya Durga Puja, which will be celebrated tomorrow. He extended greetings to members of the Hindu community and followers of Sanatan Dharma in Bangladesh and across the world on the occasion of one of their major religious festivals.
In his message, Tarique Rahman said that, according to Hindu beliefs, Goddess Durga descends from heaven to earth for the welfare of the world, bringing blessings to devotees, destroying evil forces and nurturing creation.
He said the festival’s worship of truth and beauty and the destruction of evil had given Sharadiya Durga Puja a unique significance.
The Prime Minister said people of different faiths across the country observe their respective religious festivals with great enthusiasm. This, he noted, reflects the enduring religious, social and cultural values of Bangladesh.
Through religious, cultural and social activities, the mutual friendship, harmony, goodwill and brotherhood among people of different faiths, ethnic groups and communities flourish as part of their shared identity as Bangladeshis, he added.
Tarique Rahman said Bangladesh had embarked on a renewed journey towards democracy following the ouster of the fascist regime at the cost of thousands of lives. A major initiative to rebuild the country had also begun.
He said the government was committed to building a welfare-oriented, safe and humane Bangladesh for all citizens, regardless of political affiliation, opinion, religion or ethnicity.
He expressed hope that the country's diverse society and way of life would be enriched by messages of goodwill and communal harmony.
“Religion is individual, but the state belongs to all. Everyone has the right to security, regardless of religion,” the Prime Minister said.
Addressing members of the Hindu community, he urged them to celebrate the festival across the country with enthusiasm, joy and confidence, without fear, and extended his greetings once again.
