President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has extended greetings and congratulations to Hindu communities in Bangladesh and abroad on the occasion of Sharadiya Durga Puja.

He conveyed the greetings in a message on Friday, October 16, marking the festival.

The president said Durga Puja is the principal religious festival of Bengali Hindus. The arrival of Goddess Durga amid the clear autumn sky, white kash flowers and a festive atmosphere inspires new hope and a commitment to well-being among her devotees.

He said the central message of the festival is the destruction of evil and the triumph of truth, beauty and goodness. It also represents the enduring call for justice and humanity against injustice, falsehood and inhumanity.

The president said the Hindu community had long celebrated Durga Puja through various festivities, making it a unique example of communal harmony in Bangladesh.

He noted that Durga Puja is not only a religious festival for followers of the Hindu faith but is also deeply connected with the country's traditional social culture and heritage. The festival brings people from all walks of life together in bonds of goodwill, mutual empathy and brotherhood.

He expressed hope that the festival would shine with the light of truth and beauty and further strengthen harmony and goodwill among people regardless of religion or background.

Highlighting the government's commitment to ensuring religious freedom for all, the president said it was supporting the management, renovation and development of Hindu religious institutions and places of worship, as it does for other religious institutions.

He added that initiatives were being taken to provide monthly honorariums to Hindu priests, strengthen the activities of the Hindu Religious Welfare Trust and improve the coordination and effectiveness of religious welfare grants and management.

The president called on all concerned to ensure that members of Hindu and other religious communities could observe their respective religious rituals freely, safely and without fear.

He said all religions teach truth, justice, restraint and human welfare, while guiding people away from wrongdoing and falsehood.

He urged people to follow their respective religious teachings and work together for the welfare of humanity, stressing that the state and society shared the responsibility of ensuring that no one faced discrimination, deprivation or insecurity because of their religion or identity.

He also called for the joy of Durga Puja to reach disadvantaged, underprivileged and vulnerable people.

Expressing hope that the festival would bring happiness, peace and prosperity to everyone, the president said he wanted the messages of humanity, justice and well-being to reach every home, beyond all divisions.

He wished success for all programmes organised at home and abroad to mark Sharadiya Durga Puja.
