US President Donald Trump has temporarily suspended the implementation of new sanctions and additional tariffs against Russia under a recently enacted law, citing the national interests of the United States.
Trump signed an executive order on Friday (October 16), suspending the implementation of several sanctions provisions and tariff measures under the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026. The order stated that the move was in the national interests of the United States.
Trump signed the bipartisan legislation into law in September. It was scheduled to take effect on October 18 and grants the president broad authority to impose economic penalties on Russia and countries involved in its energy trade.
One of the law’s key provisions authorises tariffs of up to 100 per cent on goods from the five largest importers of Russian oil and natural gas. The measures were primarily aimed at pressuring major buyers of Russian energy, including China, India and Turkey, to reduce their purchases.
The legislation also provides for sanctions against senior Russian government officials, the banking sector and the energy industry, as well as vessels involved in evading sanctions through Russia’s so-called shadow fleet.
The executive order temporarily suspends the specified measures, while leaving open the possibility of further action if deemed necessary.
