A Dhaka court on Sunday granted bail to Md Rakib Hossain( 24), an accused in the case over the death of headteacher Ronjila Parvin(56), who died after being pulled off a moving autorickshaw by motorcycle-borne snatchers near the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

Judge Ayesha Akter Mousumi of the Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court granted him bail on a Tk 5,000 bond until submission of the police report.

Defence lawyer Md Mehedi Hasan Mazumder said Rakib had been implicated despite having no involvement in the incident. He claimed that although the first motorcycle seized belonged to Rakib, it was in a garage at the time of the incident. CCTV footage was available to support the claim, he added.

According to the case documents, Ronjila was the headteacher of Bagbari Government Primary School in Gabtali upazila of Bogura.

On August 29, she was travelling with her husband in an autorickshaw along Manik Mia Avenue near Gate No. 12 of the parliament complex at around 5:55am to visit an eye specialist when snatchers grabbed her bag and pulled her off the moving vehicle. She suffered severe head injuries and was later declared dead by doctors.

Her husband, Md Abdul Matin, filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

On August 30, Rab-2 arrested suspects from different parts of Dhaka and seized a smartphone, cash and a Yamaha R15 motorcycle allegedly used in the crime. A court subsequently granted the accused five days of remand.
