Bangladesh began their campaign in the four-nation Begum Khaleda Zia IHF Nations Trophy Asia Zone-2 tournament with a commanding 33-20 victory over Nepal at the Shaheed Captain M Mansur Ali National Handball Stadium in Dhaka on Sunday.

The hosts dominated the opening match with an aggressive attacking display, taking a 13-9 lead at half-time before extending the margin in the second half to seal a convincing 13-goal victory under Spanish coach Ana Alonso.

Alpana Akter led Bangladesh’s scoring with seven goals to earn the player-of-the-match award. Mishti Khatun and Shyamoli Ming added six goals each, while captain Ismetara Nishi scored five. Saima Jannat Sima netted four goals, Masuda Akter scored twice, and Purnima Rani, Anuradha Pahan and Tasnia Rahman Arsha contributed one goal each.

The four-team competition is being played in a single-league format, making every match crucial in the race for a place in the final. The emphatic opening victory has given Bangladesh an early boost as they seek to maintain their momentum in the tournament.

The win also offered Bangladesh an opportunity to avenge their defeat to Nepal at the 2019 South Asian Games.

Bangladesh will face India in their next match on Monday, with Alonso’s side aiming to build on their opening success.
