Bangladesh will look to recover from their heavy defeat to Zimbabwe when they face Afghanistan in the UAE ODI tri-series on October 21, with the opening loss highlighting the need for greater batting consistency and stronger support for the bowling attack.

The Tigers went down by 99 runs in Abu Dhabi on Saturday after failing to capitalise on an impressive start from Taskin Ahmed, who claimed three early wickets to leave Zimbabwe struggling at 24 for three.

Veteran batters Craig Ervine and Brendan Taylor turned the match around with a 150-run fourth-wicket partnership. Taylor scored 81, while captain Ervine made 93 as Zimbabwe recovered to post 271 for eight in their 50 overs.

Bangladesh had an opportunity to put the visitors under sustained pressure but could not prevent the experienced pair from rebuilding the innings. Taskin finished with three wickets, while Shoriful Islam and Saif Hassan claimed two apiece.

The chase offered little resistance after a promising contribution from Tanzid Hasan. The opener struck 46 off 38 balls, but Bangladesh lost wickets regularly and were eventually dismissed for 172 in 33.4 overs.

Saif scored 26 and Rishad Hossain added 23, yet the middle order failed to produce the partnerships required to keep the chase alive. Brad Evans led Zimbabwe's attack with four wickets, while Wellington Masakadza and Sikandar Raza took two each.

The defeat leaves Bangladesh needing a more complete performance against Afghanistan. The team must find a way to turn early opportunities into sustained pressure and avoid another collapse when the top order fails to establish a platform.

The tri-series offers Bangladesh an opportunity to assess their ODI combinations as preparations continue for the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. However, the immediate priority will be to improve their execution with both bat and ball.

Afghanistan will face Zimbabwe on October 19 before meeting Bangladesh two days later. The Tigers will need a stronger all-round effort to remain in contention for a place in the October 23 final.
