Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed officials concerned to enhance the operational capacity of Mongla Port, ensure faster cargo handling and accelerate its modernisation.

He gave the directives while inspecting the overall operations and infrastructure of the country's second-largest seaport on Thursday afternoon.

Around 3:00 PM, the prime minister visited the port's jetty area and inspected various facilities, including the port expansion project, jetty facilities and container yards.

Tarique Rahman arrived in Mongla on Thursday morning as part of an official visit aimed at exploring the economic potential of the coastal southwestern region and reviewing the port's capacity. He reached the area around 10am after touring Khulna and coastal areas near the Sundarbans by helicopter and watercraft.

He later arrived at the Bangladesh Navy's Mongla base before heading directly to the port's jetty area. BNP leaders and activists gathered at the main entrance to greet him as he entered the port.

Senior officials of the Mongla Port Authority and representatives of the Ministry of Shipping accompanied the prime minister during the inspection.

After visiting the port, the prime minister was scheduled to review other development projects, including the proposed economic zone of the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA), before returning to Dhaka.
