Dhaka College Chhatra Dal leaders have been accused of attacking, occupying, looting, and beating up a shopkeeper and a market manager at Globe Shopping Centre in the capital's New Market area.
The incident of vandalism and assault took place around 2:00 PM on Thursday (October 23) at shop number 28 named 'Achil Valor' on the second floor of the shopping centre.
The accused are Dhaka College Chhatra Dal Joint Convenors Majedul Islam, Jamal Ahmed Jenin, and Saif Hasan, Convenor Members Sagar Khan, Parvez Mosharraf, and Opu Mridha, and activists Mostak Ahmed and Naim Ahmed.
CCTV footage of the incident shows a group of activists led by Majedul and Jamal vandalizing the shop. At one point, shop tenant Aminul Islam and his son were seen being assaulted. When Market Manager Jewel Rana rushed to the spot, he was also punched and kicked, while goods from the shop were removed.
Shopkeeper Aminul said, "I rented the shop from the land owner of the market, who gave it to me starting October 1. Suddenly, a man named Harun claimed ownership of the shop. Afterward, 30 to 40 people including Majedul and Jamal of Dhaka College tore everything apart and threw my goods outside."
"They beat up my son right in front of me and threatened to slice my throat. After assaulting us, they threw out everything including moneybags, televisions, computers, and goods, and locked the shop. My goods are still lying in front of the shop and I haven't touched them. I suffered a loss of two lakh taka. Police came and asked us to keep the shop closed for now. What should we do now?" he added.
Globe Shopping Centre Manager Jewel said, "The land owner of the market allocated the shop to a tenant who was running it. Later, some people associated with politics from Dhaka College and an outsider claiming illegal ownership tried to grab the shop. They came today to occupy it and attacked and beat up the tenant. We have never seen Harun, who claims illegal ownership, before. He is an expatriate living in Italy. We are seeking legal action over the shop attack."
When asked, Chhatra Dal leader Majedul said, "The issue is that an expatriate's shop was grabbed a week ago. He has all legal documents. A case is also pending in the High Court, and police are aware of it. However, since he was in Italy, the building owner had removed his goods a week ago and handed the shop over to someone else."
Majedul stated that the expatriate came back to the country and approached police, administration, and 'senior brothers' for a solution. Everyone advised him to take back possession of the shop on his own terms. Additionally, a case will be filed in court this coming Sunday.
When questioned about the assault, he said, "When he (the expatriate) went to the market, they grabbed him. They didn't show the full CCTV footage. They hit him. Later I told them, brothers, don't fight. They grabbed my collar. We don't like these things. It wasn't even necessary, as this is a shop dispute, they should sort it out themselves. Law is there to handle it. We won't take anyone's side. But they took possession unjustly."
Another Chhatra Dal leader, Jamal, said, "I was going home, so I went to Globe Market to shop. At the same time, a commotion started there, and I went forward to see. Upon reaching the spot, I learned that this shop was grabbed a week ago by Globe Market land owner Hasib using some Dhaka College boys. Following the incident, the shop owner (Harun) came to try and resolve the matter through utmost effort. But ignoring everything, they attacked Harun. I went there and tried to stop everyone."
When contacted, Dhaka College Chhatra Dal Member Secretary Millad Hossain said, "I am outside Dhaka and do not know about the incident yet. If such an event is found to have occurred, we will certainly take action against it. We do not support such activities. Going to any market and carrying out attacks and vandalism is unacceptable. There is no scope for such activities in our organization."
New Market police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Ayub said that a tense situation has arisen between two parties regarding the ownership of a shop, and a case is already ongoing in the High Court over the matter.
