State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Mir Shahe Alam called opposition leaders "cheats" for failing to attend the inauguration of the July Memorial built to honor the martyrs of July-August despite receiving invitations.

He made the remark during a press briefing held at Shibganj Upazila Parishad in Chapainawabganj at 10:00 AM on Friday (October 23).

The state minister said those who constantly politicize and raise their voices about July-August failed to attend the opening ceremony after being invited, offering lame excuses for their absence.

He noted that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the July Memorial built by the government at Osmani Udyan in the capital on October 19. The Dhaka South City Corporation invited the presidents and general secretaries of allied, partner, and coalition political parties to the event, with Administrator Freedom Fighter Abdus Salam confirming the invitations over the phone.

Mir Shahe Alam said the Prime Minister inaugurated the memorial and reopened Osmani Udyan after 10 years alongside family members of four martyrs, including the fathers of Shahid Mir Mugdho, Abu Sayed, and Anas, as well as the mother of another martyr. The memorial displays the names of 834 gazetted martyrs.

Addressing the Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General's statement, the state minister rejected the claim that opposition leaders skipped the event because the opposition leader's name was absent from the invitation card.

He mentioned that senior politician Mahmudur Rahman Manna, national leader Saiful Huq, and BNP Standing Committee member and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed were not named on the invitation cards either, yet the Prime Minister called them onto the stage. Had opposition leaders accepted the invitation and attended, the Prime Minister would have invited their representatives onto the stage as well.

Responding to another remark by the Jamaat Secretary General, Mir Shahe Alam said the opposition is enjoying unprecedented facilities for the first time in the country's history. He urged them to stop seeking votes with promises of heaven before elections and refrain from cheap politics.

The state minister alleged that while people were promised heaven before the vote, those leaders were seen dancing to the beat of drums during Puja but disappeared from Puja celebrations after the election. He also accused them of spreading confusion in the name of a single-point demand.

Mir Shahe Alam added that BNP does not engage in politics by capitalizing on any specific religion or group, emphasizing that the party will reach out to the people again by winning the hearts of all Bangladeshis.
