Police have arrested Kamrul Islam Sumon, 38, a leader of the banned Awami League, from Mohammadpur in the capital.

He was arrested during a raid in the Mohammadia Housing Limited area under Mohammadpur Police Station at around 6:30 PM on Friday.

Sumon is the son of late Jamal Uddin of Charpapati area under Companiganj Police Station in Noakhali. He was a former organising secretary of Ward 33 Awami League in Mohammadpur and is currently a member of the same ward unit.

According to Mohammadpur Police Station sources, police conducted the operation following a tip-off and arrested him from the area.

During preliminary interrogation, police found that Sumon had been maintaining contact with central leaders of the banned Awami League over mobile phone.

Police alleged that he was staying in the area to carry out criminal activities in the capital and organise processions for the party.

Legal proceedings against Sumon are underway, according to police sources.
