Around 7,500 Bangladeshis are being held in Saudi Arabian prisons on various charges, while Bangladesh has sought details about the execution of two citizens, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed said on Friday (October 23).
Nazrul Islam and Sweety Akter were reportedly executed by beheading on October 14 over alleged “immoral acts” at a mosque in Mecca. Bangladesh said it had not been informed beforehand and has formally requested copies of the court verdicts and details from Saudi authorities.
The Bangladesh Consulate in Jeddah has sought clarification, and the Saudi ambassador in Dhaka has been summoned for discussions.
Obaed also said the government was working to extend visas for expatriates stranded by the Middle East conflict and considering rehabilitation and new job opportunities for workers who have lost employment.
