Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain has said that the government is prioritising the health sector and plans to transform the country’s healthcare system by the next fiscal year.
He announced the plans for 151-bed hospitals in every upazila and ongoing construction of eight cancer hospitals across the country.
Speaking at an event at BRAC University on Monday morning, the minister said the government would provide all necessary support for cancer research.
He said construction work was underway on eight cancer hospitals, one in each of the country’s eight administrative divisions.
The minister also announced a Tk 16,000 crore project to establish 151-bed hospitals in every upazila.
Under the plan, each upazila hospital will have 20 beds for maternity patients, 20 for newborns and 10 beds for kidney patients requiring dialysis, he said.
Highlighting Bangladesh’s pharmaceutical industry, Sakhawat said medicines manufactured in the country were being exported to various countries around the world.
He expressed optimism about the industry’s potential in the United States, saying Bangladeshi medicines could capture a substantial share of the US market.
The minister also criticised the condition of the country’s healthcare system in previous years, alleging that the sector had been severely damaged by mismanagement and widespread corruption.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to giving healthcare the highest priority and improving services across the country by the next fiscal year.
