The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has announced a series of nationwide programmes for November 7 to mark National Revolution and Solidarity Day, including rallies, flag hoisting, commemorative tributes and cultural events.

BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the programmes on Monday after a joint meeting at the party’s central office in the city's Nayapaltan.

Under the schedule, BNP offices across the country will hoist party flags at 6AM on November 7.

A colourful central rally will be organised in Dhaka, while district and upazila units have been instructed to arrange rallies in their respective areas.

At 11AM, party leaders will pay tribute at the graves of BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia.

The programme will include laying wreaths and reciting Fateha.

The party and its affiliated organisations will also organise discussion meetings and publish commemorative posters. The BNP’s student wing, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, will arrange drawing competitions and art exhibitions.

A discussion meeting is tentatively scheduled for November 6, Rizvi said. The event will take place on that date if approved by the BNP chairman; otherwise, it will be held on a date determined by the party chief.

Describing November 7 as an important day in the country’s history, Rizvi said its spirit represented the defence of Bangladesh’s independence, sovereignty and democracy.

According to Rizvi, political conflict and uncertainty before 1975 had fuelled public aspirations for change, culminating in the events of November 7 that year. He said Ziaur Rahman subsequently emerged as a central figure in national politics and state power.

Referring to Ziaur Rahman’s declaration of independence from Kalurghat in 1971, Rizvi said he had provided direction to the nation during a critical period.

Rizvi also claimed that multiparty democracy, freedom of expression and press freedom returned after the November 7 events.

He referred to the establishment of BAKSAL on January 25, 1975, saying most newspapers were shut down, leaving only four in operation and forcing many journalists out of work. He said newspapers and political parties later regained the opportunity to resume their activities.

Drawing a connection between November 7 and the July uprising, Rizvi said the revolutionary spirit of 1975 had influenced the later movement.

He said students, workers and ordinary citizens had united in the movement, leading to the fall of what he described as fascism on August 5 and reopening the path to democracy.

Rizvi said the November 7 programme had been drafted following consultations with leaders of the BNP and its affiliated organisations.

The planned events are intended to commemorate the day and highlight the party’s interpretation of its historical significance, with rallies and other activities scheduled across the country.
