A 32-year-old Filipino tourist sustained severe burn injuries following a fire caused by a cooking gas leak at a rented apartment in Dhaka's Banani area.
The victim, identified as Keistin Var Bunag, suffered 63 percent burns on her body and is currently in critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
According to Alamin, the manager of the residential building, Bunag had arrived in Bangladesh on October 15 on a tourist visa alongside a Japanese national, Nakashima Fumiaki, and the duo had rented the apartment for a two-month stay.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:00AM on Wednesday (October 28) when Bunag attempted to light the gas stove to cook breakfast, accidentally triggering a fire fueled by leaked gas inside the kitchen.
Her companion, Fumiaki, who was away from the residence at the time of the explosion, confirmed that Bunag sustained the injuries while attempting to ignite the stove.
She was initially rushed to a local hospital before being transferred to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery on Wednesday evening for advanced medical treatment.
Dr. Sultan Mahmud Shikder, resident physician at the institute, confirmed that 63 percent of her body was severely burnt and described her condition as critical, noting that she remains under close observation in the ICU.
