Russia has claimed that Ukraine launched 1,214 drones targeting 20 Russian regions in a single night, prompting temporary flight restrictions at several airports.
In a statement on Thursday, Russia’s Defence Ministry said its air defence systems had intercepted and destroyed 1,214 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones overnight on Wednesday.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 613 drones had targeted the Moscow region alone. In a post on Russia’s social media platform Max, he said air defence systems had neutralised most of the drones.
Russia had previously reported that Ukraine launched 1,110 drones in a coordinated attack on September 20.
Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency, Rosaviatsia, said flight operations were temporarily suspended at Moscow’s Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports to ensure aviation safety. The restrictions were lifted later.
A source in air traffic control told Russia’s state news agency TASS that two flights travelling from Istanbul to Moscow were diverted back to Istanbul because of the temporary restrictions at Vnukovo Airport.
Similar temporary flight restrictions were reportedly imposed at airports in 18 other Russian cities.
The claims could not be independently verified amid the ongoing war, and Ukraine had not issued an official statement on the reported attack at the time of publication.
