France was once again rocked by protests and clashes as more than 320,000 people took to the streets in Paris and other cities to protest rising living costs and dissatisfaction with the quality of public services.
Clashes broke out between protesters and police, prompting law enforcers to fire tear gas to bring the situation under control. At least 290 people were arrested, according to the BBC.
According to data released by the French Interior Ministry on Saturday (October 31), more than 320,000 people participated in demonstrations across the country. Police said around 70,000 people took part in protests in Paris alone.
The demonstrations took place across France for the third consecutive weekend, as protesters took to the streets ahead of preparations for a nationwide general strike in the coming days. Rising living costs and dissatisfaction with public services were the main reasons behind the protests.
Two weeks earlier, demonstrations had triggered violence, vandalism and looting in several parts of the country. Authorities made extensive preparations to prevent a recurrence of those incidents. However, despite heightened security measures, clashes erupted between protesters and police in Paris.
The wave of protests has also spread beyond France, with demonstrations held in Albania, Germany and Italy. The BBC reported that the trend of young people taking to the streets in protest is spreading across several European countries.
