Garment workers demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000 blocked roads and clashed with police for a second consecutive day in Dhaka's Mirpur, setting fire to a police vehicle at Mirpur-11 on Sunday, November 1.
The clashes erupted on Sunday morning as workers took to the streets across various parts of Mirpur, bringing traffic to a complete standstill and creating intense tension throughout the area.
The demonstration began around 9:00 AM with a road blockade at the Mirpur-10 roundabout, before expanding as workers from garment factories around Mirpur-11, 12, and the Proshika intersection joined the protest.
When law enforcement attempted to clear the roads using water cannons, tear gas shells, and sound grenades to disperse the crowd, widespread chases and counter-chases broke out between police and the protesting workers.
Pallabi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jalal Uddin confirmed that workers had been gathering on the streets since morning across Mirpur-10, 11, and 12. He added that additional police forces were deployed to bring the situation under control and clear the key thoroughfares.
