Abu Mokarram, 44, a death-row convict in a murder case who had been in hiding for a long time after escaping from the Kashimpur High-Security Central Jail, has been arrested by SRB-11. He was apprehended during a special operation conducted on Tuesday night (November 3) near the Meghna Toll Plaza in the Sonargaon area of Narayanganj.
This information was shared by the battalion commander, Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Masud Parvez, during a press conference held at the SRB-11 battalion office on Wednesday afternoon (November 4).
The arrested individual, Abu Mokarram, is a resident of Uttar Barkol (Sardar Bari) under Chandanaish Police Station in the Chittagong district. His father’s name is Abu Taleb.
It was disclosed during the press conference that Abu Mokarram had been incarcerated at the Kashimpur High-Security Central Jail in Gazipur since July 9, 2013, following his conviction and death sentence in a high-profile murder case filed at the Chandanaish Police Station in Chittagong.
However, amidst the instability that followed the political transition on August 5, 2024, inmates at the prison staged a riot and acts of arson on the morning of August 6. During the chaos, they took prison guards hostage and managed to scale the prison’s perimeter wall using a makeshift ladder constructed from an electrical utility pole. Abu Mokarram was among the inmates who escaped. The prison authorities filed a case regarding this incident at the Konabari Police Station in Gazipur.
According to SRB-11, following his escape, Abu Mokarram frequently adopted disguises to evade the law. He had since remained in hiding at various locations across the country, all the while concealing his true identity.
