Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to an extraordinary 23-year journey with Portugal that established him as one of the greatest players in the history of the game.
The 41-year-old forward confirmed his decision on Thursday through a social media video, saying he would hand back Portugal's iconic number seven shirt after the November international break.
"Portugal will always be a part of me," Ronaldo said, reflecting on a career that began with his international debut against Kazakhstan in August 2003.
Ronaldo leaves the international stage holding two remarkable men's football records: 146 goals and 234 appearances for his country. He captained Portugal to their first major international trophy at Euro 2016, followed by UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.
He also became the first player to score in six editions of the men's FIFA World Cup, although the 2026 tournament ended with Portugal's last-16 defeat to eventual champions Spain.
His announcement follows a recent disagreement with national coach Jorge Jesus, which led to disciplinary action.
While his international chapter is closing, Ronaldo will continue his club career with Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr, pursuing the milestone of 1,000 career goals.
