Bangladesh is likely to experience four to six mild to moderate cold waves over the next three months, according to the three-month long-term forecast issued by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
Meteorologist Dr Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallik stated that one or two mild cold waves are expected in December, primarily affecting northern and western regions such as Rajshahi, Rangpur, and Khulna divisions, where temperatures may drop below eight to ten degrees Celsius.
In January, moderate cold waves are likely, with two to three spells potentially intensifying into severe cold waves where temperatures fall between four and six degrees Celsius. Moderate to dense fog is expected over river basins and parts of the country during late night to early morning hours.
Overall winter expected to be warmer due to active El Nino
Despite the periodic cold waves, the Met Office projects that overall day and night temperatures during this winter will remain slightly above normal.
Dr Mallik explained that active El Nino conditions and elevated global temperatures are impacting weather patterns across South Asia. As a result, the frequency, duration, and intensity of extreme cold waves will be reduced, leading to a comparatively warmer winter season overall.
Forecast warns of potential cyclones and normal rainfall
The three-month outlook also indicates the formation of two to four low-pressure systems in the Bay of Bengal, with one or two potentially intensifying into cyclones.
Dr Mallik noted that October and November are naturally prone to tropical cyclones due to increased sea surface temperatures during the sun's southward movement. The forecast also predicts normal rainfall across the country, with coastal divisions such as Chittagong and Barisal expected to receive the highest rainfall in November before precipitation declines in December and January.
