Dhaka kitchen markets show mixed trends due to early winter vegetables being affordable while Ramadan necessities such as Chickpea prices soar.
Chickpea prices rise in Dhaka markets ahead of Ramadan
Chickpea prices have risen by ten to fifteen Taka per kilogram in Dhaka's retail markets, even though several months remain before Ramadan.
Traders report that chickpeas now sell for one hundred and ten to one hundred and fifteen Taka per kilogram, up from under one hundred Taka last week, while chickpea split pulses have increased to one hundred and twenty to one hundred and thirty Taka.
Retailers attribute the hike to rising wholesale costs, with shoppers expressing frustration over pre-Ramadan price pressures driven by market syndicates.
Winter vegetables bring relief to markets amidst steady meat and fish prices
The arrival of early winter vegetables has eased consumer pressure in Dhaka, though meat, fish, and staple grocery prices remain largely unchanged.
Seasonal produce such as country beans, cauliflowers, cabbages, and radishes have increased in supply, lowering prices for several items to fifty to sixty Taka per kilogram. However, tomatoes, green chilies, carrots, and round eggplants continue to command high prices at one hundred and twenty Taka or more per kilogram.
Oil, meat and fish
Meanwhile, bottled soybean oil remains scarce, selling at two hundred and five to two hundred and ten Taka per kilogram, while garlic and ginger maintain elevated rates.
Broiler chicken sells at one hundred and seventy to one hundred and ninety Taka per kilogram, beef ranges between eight hundred and eight hundred and fifty Taka, and mutton costs up to one thousand two hundred and fifty Taka.
River fish and hilsa also remain expensive, with large hilsa fetching up to two thousand six hundred Taka per kilogram.
