The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has issued new directives for learner driving license holders, prohibiting them from operating motor vehicles on roads except during training sessions accompanied by a certified instructor.

The transport authority also mandated the prominent display of a large red 'L' sign on vehicles being driven by learners.

The instructions were announced via an official notice posted on the BRTA's official Facebook page on Friday (November 6) afternoon.

"Operating a motor vehicle on public roads without a full, valid driving license is a punishable offense. Learner license holders are only permitted to drive during training sessions accompanied by a certified instructor, with a large red 'L' sign clearly displayed in a visible location on the vehicle," the BRTA notice stated.

Under road safety protocols, individuals acquiring a learner license to practice driving are required to display the red 'L' board—short for 'Learner'—on both the front and rear of the vehicle.

The symbol alerts surrounding motorists that the vehicle is being operated by a novice driver, allowing them to maintain safe distances and exercise necessary caution.

BRTA officials noted that the directive aims to enforce traffic regulations, enhance road safety during driver training, and raise awareness among novice motorists across the country.
