Intellectual corruption has caused greater damage to the judiciary than financial corruption, Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman has said, adding that the government and the Chief Justice are pursuing a zero-tolerance policy against judges facing specific allegations.
He made the remarks on Sunday morning (November 8) after inaugurating a workshop on ‘Integrity in Judicial Proceedings’ for judges of subordinate courts.
The Law Minister said, the government would not interfere in the work of a judge once appointed as a permanent judge of the Supreme Court. He also said the government was committed to establishing a separate secretariat for the judiciary, which would be implemented through constitutional amendments.
He further said, all legal steps would be taken to bring Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh under the prisoner transfer agreement, describing her as a criminal in the government's view.
Commenting on the Rohingya genocide case at the International Court of Justice, the minister said Bangladesh expected justice in the verdict scheduled for November 19.
Meanwhile, Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman said establishing an independent judiciary free from political influence was essential to ensure the benefits of the justice system.
