India has temporarily suspended CC block placement work on the Indian side of the Kahua River following intervention by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), amid concerns over potential erosion on the Bangladeshi side.
Officials from the Water Development Board (WDB) and the upazila administration visited the river embankment area in Uttar Kolapara of Parashuram municipality on Saturday to inspect the site.
Speaking on Sunday morning (November 8), Lieutenant Colonel Hasibul Islam, captain of the Feni Battalion (4 BGB), stated that Indian authorities were supposed to inform the BGB before initiating the block placement. Upon learning of the work, the BGB contacted Indian authorities and instructed them to halt operations, which have since been suspended.
WDB Feni Executive Engineer Mohammad Monirul Islam, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Atanu Barua, and other relevant officials inspected the site. Monirul Islam noted that installing blocks exclusively on the Indian side could endanger the Bangladeshi portion, adding that necessary measures will be finalized following consultations with the BGB commander.
UNO Atanu Barua stressed that preemptive steps must be taken to protect the Bangladeshi territory from erosion.
Locals expressed fears that without adequate repairs and block placements on the Bangladesh side—where roughly 200 metres of embankment remain unaddressed despite an ongoing 250-metre project—several thousand families, along with local mosques and graveyards, face severe flood risks.
Recently, a flag meeting between the BGB and BSF had agreed on repairing 2.3 kilometres in Amzadnagar on the Indian side and 250 metres in Uttar Kolapara on the Bangladeshi side. However, local anxiety mounted after Indian workers began placing blocks on Friday without reciprocal progress, prompting local gatherings and subsequent administrative action.
