Bangladesh's readymade garment (RMG) exports grew 5.82 per cent year-on-year to $13.75 billion in the first four months of the 2026-27 fiscal year (July-October), driven by strong shipments to the United States and non-traditional markets, while growth in the European Union remained relatively modest.

According to data compiled by Bangladesh Apparel Voice (BAV) based on Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) statistics, RMG exports stood at $12.99 billion during the same period of the previous fiscal year.

Among the major destinations, exports to the United States rose 10.16 per cent to $2.85 billion, while shipments to non-traditional markets increased 9.30 per cent to $2.37 billion. Exports to the European Union grew 2.79 per cent to $6.43 billion, while those to the United Kingdom and Canada increased 6.92 per cent and 2.41 per cent respectively.

Knitwear exports outperformed woven garments during the period. Knitwear shipments increased 6.79 per cent to $7.73 billion, compared with 4.60 per cent growth in woven garment exports to $6.02 billion. Knitwear accounted for 56.2 per cent of total RMG exports.

The US market made the largest contribution to export growth, accounting for around 35 per cent of the total increase. Non-traditional markets contributed approximately 27 per cent, followed by the EU at 23 per cent and the UK at 14 per cent.

Among European destinations, Spain overtook Germany to become Bangladesh's largest single-country RMG market in the EU. Exports to Spain rose 13.36 per cent to $1.45 billion, while shipments to Germany remained almost unchanged at $1.44 billion.

Meanwhile, exports to France, Italy, Denmark and Belgium declined. In the UK, knitwear exports increased 11.30 per cent, while woven garment shipments fell 1.78 per cent.

Turkey emerges as a major growth driver

Among non-traditional destinations, Turkey recorded the highest growth, with exports surging 107.05 per cent to $206.5 million. The country alone accounted for around 53 per cent of the export growth in non-traditional markets.

Japan remained the largest non-traditional market, with exports rising 2.40 per cent to $437.3 million. Shipments to Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, Brazil, South Africa and South Korea also increased.

However, exports to India, China, Russia and New Zealand declined during the period.

Despite continued reliance on the EU and US markets, their combined share of Bangladesh's RMG exports edged down to 67.5 per cent from 68.1 per cent a year earlier, reflecting stronger growth in non-traditional destinations.

Overall, the export performance indicates continued growth in Bangladesh's apparel sector, with the US and emerging markets increasingly contributing to export earnings.
