State Minister for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Nurul Haque Nur has described garment workers' demand for higher wages as justified, saying the government had started working on the issue even before the workers launched their movement.

He said the government had formed a minimum wage board, taking the workers' demands seriously.

He made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists after a meeting of the law and order committee at the Patuakhali Deputy Commissioner's office on Sunday (November 8).

Nur said the government had been working to increase workers' wages and improve their living standards, including access to healthcare, education and other essential rights. He added that he was aware of the process as he had previously been responsible for the Labour Ministry and remained involved in its committee.

He said the workers' demands had received serious consideration from the government and the formation of the minimum wage board had helped end the protests, reflecting workers' confidence in the government.

On the possibility of political forces that fled the country returning and becoming active in politics, Nur said they had suffered a political defeat and had no possibility of returning or resuming political activities.

He also alleged that attempts were being made to destabilise the current elected government, adding that such forces could be resisted if the people remained supportive of the government.

Regarding the participation of different political parties in programmes marking National Revolution and Solidarity Day, the state minister said political forces, including the ruling and opposition parties, would jointly resist any resurgence of what he described as defeated fascist forces.

Nur further said people had faced persecution under 17 years of authoritarian rule, forcing many to leave the country and preventing others from pursuing businesses or jobs. He said the mass uprising had not been the movement of any single party but a collective effort involving political parties, students and the public.
