Five contest for mayoral post, 187 for councillor posts

COMILLA, Feb 3: A total of five mayoral candidates submitted their nomination papers for mayoral post, 42 aspirants for nine reserved woman councillor posts and 145 aspirants for 27 general councillor posts in Comilla City Corporation election on Thursday, the last date for submitting nomination papers.
The mayoral candidates are ruling Awami League nominee Anjum Sultan Sima, immediate past mayor and BNP nominee Monirul Hoque Shakku, Shirin Akhter from JSD and Advocate Shoebur Rahman from Progotishil Ganatantrik Party (PDP). Major (Retd.) Mamunur Rashid also submitted a nomination paper as Independent candidate.
AL candidate Anjum Sultana Sima submitted her nomination paper at 11am while BNP candidate Monirul Hoque Shakku submitted his nomination paper at 12pm.
Sima's father elderly AL leader and former joint convener of Comilla District AL Principal Afzal Khan, former administrator of Comilla Zila Parishad Alhaj Md. Omar Faruk, Comilla district AL Joint Secretary Sajjad Hossain Swapan, AL leader Safiq Sikder, Comilla Victoria College former VP Nur-ur Rahman Mahmud Tanim and Juba League leader Shahinul Islam Shaheen, were present among others with Anjum Sultana Sima.
AL candidate Sima said, party leaders and supporters will help her to win the boat. "I need the supports of all', she told the reporters.
On the other hand, BNP's Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan, Publication secretary Sahedd Uddin Chowdhury Anny, Assistant Organising Secretary Abdul Awal Khan and others were present with Shakku.
Shakku told the reporters after filling his nomination paper, "We want level-playing field." He hoped that  the public verdict will be in his favour.
Nazrul Islam Khan said the Election Commission should prove their neutrality in this election.
