
KHULNA, Apr 25: Different socio-cultural organisations here on Tuesday celebrated the 135th founding anniversary of Khulna as a district amid great enthusiasm and festivity.
The third-largest city of Bangladesh Khulna was separated as a sub-division from Jessore district in 1842 and later it was recognised as a district on April 25 in 1882.
Khulna was declared as a Municipal council in 1884 and promoted to a Municipal corporation in 1984. Then Khulna has been declared as a City Corporation in 1990.
To mark the day, Greater Khulna Development Action Coordination Committee (GKDACC) brought out a colourful rally from GKDACC office at Sonadanga KDA Avenue area, and it paraded the main streets in the city.
Parliament Members- Talukder Abdul Khaleque and Mizanur Rahman Mizan, Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md Abdus Samad, Deputy Commissioner Nazmul Ahsan, former MP Nazrul Islam Manju, and KCC Mayor Moniruzzaman Mony, among others, attended the rally.
Afterwards, a discussion meeting was held at the GKDACC office followed by a cultural function.
GKDACC President Sheikh Ashrafuzzaman chaired the meeting.
It was also addressed, among others, by Mizanur Rahman Mizan, MP, and Chairman of Khulna Zila Parishad Sheikh Harun-ur-Rashid.
Earlier, a cake was cut at the GKDACC office marking the anniversary.
Others organisations including Khulna Unnayan Committee, Debating Society, Amra Khulnabasi and Khulna Unnayan Forum also organised different programmes on the day.
Meanwhile, Khulna City Corporation (KCC), Khulna Zila Parishad, and Khulna University (KU) have been illuminated to mark the anniversary.
