Bodies of 4 militants found in Shibganj den

Police claim they blow themselves up, woman, child taken out alive

Law enforcers recovered four bodies from the militant hideout in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj on Thursday.
The body of militant Rafiqul Islam alias Abu was among the four found dead in explosions at the hideout, police said. Operation Eagle Hunt was officially declared closed after the recovery of the bodies on Thursday evening.
Khurshid Hossain Deputy Inspector General of Rajshahi Range said the suspects, includes one Rafiqul Alam Abu, a spice hawker, blew themselves up using explosives. The identities of the rest three people could not be known immediately.
DIG Khurshid said at a press briefing, "All of them including Abu,   died in suicide blasts."
Law enforcers brought Sumaiya Begum, wife of Abu, and a child out of the "militant den" around 5:00pm and 5:23pm respectively. Police whisked them to the Sadar Hospital in two separate ambulances.
Police began 'Operation Eagle Hunt' on the house surrounded by mango trees in Trimohini village on Wednesday morning. At around 10:00am, a loud explosion was heard and a bomb disposal squad was rushed to the site. At midday, the SWAT officers made the last appeal to the militants to surrender.
The police was later heard calling out to the militants over megaphone asking them one last time to surrender. Police had prevented entry of the public within 500 yards of the building.
SWAT commandos were rushed by helicopter from Dhaka and they took up positions around the building at 6:40pm on Wednesday.
Journalists waiting 500 yards from the building could hear continuous exchange of gunfire after the SWAT commandos took up position.
Earlier, TM Mujahidul Islam, Superintendent of Police of Chapainawabganj said four alleged militants along with two minor children were believed to be holed up inside the house.
According to officials of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Neo JMB leader Abu, his wife and two children used to live in the one-storey house.
He rented the house in February. Two other suspected militants may have joined them recently.
Members of Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) of DMP, who launched the operation codenamed 'Eagle Hunt' on Wednesday, resumed their operation on Tuesday morning.
They resumed the operation as police on Wednesday night suspended the raid at the house due to darkness.
Heavy sound of gunshots and explosions were heard near the house till late evening but no law enforcers were hurt.
The local administration imposed restrictions on gathering of people -- Section 144 -- in the area yesterday.
