Police on Friday recovered a huge cache of sophisticated firearms and ammunition from Narayanganj's Rupganj upazila and detained three people in this connection.
Faruque Hossain, additional superintendent of police in Narayanganj, told reporters on the spot that law enforcers, acting on a tip-off, began a raid at sector No 5 of Purbachal in Rupganj area.
Gleaning information from an alleged drug trader, who was arrested with a rifle  on Tuesday night, police conducted the raid "in a land" in the area and recovered two rocket launchers, 62 Chinese sub machine guns, 42 hand grenades, 40 magazines, four pistols and a huge cache of explosives from the underground, Faruque said.
The police official further said the firearms and ammunition have been assembled here in a bid to carry out sabotages in the country. Police suspect there might be more firearms and ammunition in the area.
Assistant Inspector General of Police Md Moniruzzaman said the arms were hidden in packets under water. Law enforcers raided a house owned by Mohammad Sharif, a resident of Daudpur Union on Wednesday. Sharif fled the scene, leaving behind one SMG and some contraband Yaba tablets in the house, Moniruzzaman added.
Police detained Sharif in Fatullah the next day and extracted information from him about the arms cache hidden in Purbachal.
Islam Hossaino officer-in-charge (OC) of Rupganj Police Station said that such firearms were "usually used by Indian separatist outfit Ulfa and militant group JMB." "The drive is still going on," he said.
"We suspect there are more firearms hidden here. A fire service team reached the spot and will start a drive to unearth more firearms," the OC said.
At a press briefing on the spot, Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Haque said 62 Chinese SMGs, five 7.62 pistols, two rocket launchers, two wirelesses, 49 mortar shells and a good number of bullets are among the recovered arms and ammunition.
"A vested quarter has stored the arms to carry out subversive activities with a vow to obstruct the ongoing development in Bangladesh", said the IGP. However, the matter will be investigated, he added.
The police headquarters on Friday formed a 12-member probe committee on the matter.
