Bangladesh sought Western countries and OIC members' intervention in resolving Myanmar's ongoing Rohingya crisis by taking up the issue in the UN Security Council's meeting.
Bangladesh also told the diplomats that Bangladesh wants full implementation of Annan Commission's report in resolving the Rohingya issue.
According to the Foreign Ministry sources the Rohingya issue could come up in the general debate in the upcoming UN General Assembly in a regular manner but if it is not accepted as in the form of a resolution paper then there is no chance to take up the issue in Security Council's meeting.
Diplomatic sources said that Bangladesh is trying to convince the UN Security Council's permanent members not to apply their veto powers to block any move against Myanmar government. However, European Union Parliament will take its position against Myanmar government but India, US, China and Russia are still against taking such a move.
The US, the UK, Canada and India expressed their deep concerns after the latest violence that created an unprecedented humanitarian crisis but we do not yet know their clear cut positions in this regard, a senior official said.
"Rohingya Muslims have now become Bangladesh's national crisis, historically they are living in Rakhine State for more than a thousand years, and we did not create the Rohingya problem. Myanmar is responsible for it so they have to find a solution ," Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali told the media following a meeting with several Western diplomats and Arab Countries separately at the national Guest House Padma on Sunday evening.
The briefings of diplomats of the countries that have missions in Dhaka, except regional countries including ASEAN, came in the wake of a fresh exodus of nearly 300,000 Rohingya Muslims to Bangladesh from Myanmar's Rakhine State since Aug 25 violence. Myanmar is a member of the ASEAN, a bloc of 10 Southeast Asian countries including Indonesia and Malaysia who have reacted to the latest violence in Rakhine State that has caused a huge humanitarian crisis.
A Foreign Ministry official will brief the bloc members today (Monday), Ministry sources said
Bangladesh also sought support from the international community, so to continue humanitarian agencies operating in Cox's Bazar that urgently need $77 million to assist the people.
"Bangladesh has been sheltering the stateless Rohingyas for decades but now it has become unbearable for us," Mahmood said.
"They (diplomats) lauded the role of Bangladesh's government in handling the Rohingya issue with Bangladesh's limited efforts," Mahmood said.
The briefing follows an exodus of nearly 300,000 Rohingya Muslims to Bangladesh from Myanmar's Rakhine State since Aug 25 violence.
"Myanmar does not recognise the Rohingya people as its citizens, Annan Commission gives an answer against it, however, a senior Minister of Myanmar told Sunday that they will not take back all Rohingyas, they will examine the national IDs . The world is seeing what is happening with the 3 lakh Rohingyas living here," the Foreign Minister said.
"About 4 lakh registered and non-registered Rohingyas were living here before the late August crackdown, however, the UN said that around 3 lakh new Rohingyas have entered Bangladesh through different borders." he said. Bangladesh cannot bear such burden forever, we apprised our government's zero tolerance attitudes, he said.
The Foreign Minister added that a collective effort is needed to protect rights of this minority Muslim community in Myanmar.
