RAJSHAHI, Oct 3: More than 250 child marriage bids have been foiled in the last two years at Bagha upazila of the district.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Hamidul Islam stopped the child marriages after he joined here two years ago.
Sources said, early marriage increased across the upazila as many parents have a tendency to get their girls married off before 15 years of age.
Observing this condition of the upazila, UNO Mohammad Hamidul Islam took it as a challenge to stop early marriage and save the girls from bad luck.
Besides, he has not only stopped child marriage but also is working on elimination of drugs, modern office, construction of border walls, martyrs' monuments, campus cleaning, construct sitting places, flower gardening, anti-militancy campaign, and development of quality of education.
According to sources, one in three women under the age of 18 get married in the developing country and the rate of marriage for girls less than 15 years of age is 10 per cent.
Talking to The Daily Observer, UNO Mohammad Hamidul Islam said, the tendency of early marriage is seen among the parents who are poor and live from hand to mouth. Especially the people living on Padma riverbank have this tendency, he added.
As a result, various types of violence on women like torture, persecution, and girls' drop out from schools are increasing in the society.
However, along with the government, the local people have come forward to stop early marriage and save the girls, he further added.
