KOYRA, KHULNA, Feb 6: The bridge built over No. 2 Koyra Canal in Koyra Sadar Union under Koyra Upazila has now become a death trap. Residents are afraid of crossing the bridge.

According to field sources, there is no railing on both sides of the bridge. Most pillars have been de-plastered. The middle of the bridge has collapsed. Rods have been visible.

Thousands of people and vehicles of four villages are crossing a large part of the broken bridge with wooden planks and bamboo. A major accident can happen anytime with collapse of the entire bridge.

Md Masum Billah, union member of Ward No. 2 of Koyra Sadar Union, said, the bridge was built in 1996 in front of No. 2 Koyra and Oratala Hafizia Madrasa. The bridge has been vulnerable for 10 years. Even in near future, there is no chance to repair the risky bridge, he added.

He further said, thousands of people are taking risk of their lives on the bridge every day. Locals fear, the bridge will collapse at any moment.

Chairman of Koyra Sadar Union SM Baharul Islam said, people of neighbouring wards 2 and 3 have to come to Koyra Sadar over the bridge at the intersection of Ward No. 2 and 4.

Upazila Engineer Mohammad Darul Huda said, the dangerous bridge has been declared abandoned. The bridge will be rebuilt soon, he added.

Koyra Upazila Chairman SM Shafiqul Islam said, necessary measures will be taken to rebuild the bridge on an urgent basis.
