SADULLAPUR, GAIBANDHA, Mar 6: People are turning landless due to erosion by the Ghaghat River in Sadullapur Upazila of the district.

This river is stretching 26 kilometre in the upazila. It is snake-shape river, causing erosion at its different points.

According to field sources, in the absence of river administration, the erosion is continuing to devour homes and croplands along its banks.

River bank living people are passing nights in sleepless panic.

A recent visit to different areas of Bongram, Jamalpur, Damodpur, and Noldanga unions found deadly scenes of erosion.

Starting from Tunirchar of Bongram, the Ghaghat River has reached border of Mithapukur in Rangpur via Sreerampur Point of Noldanga. At that point, the erosion is very severe due to reckless sand lifting by unscrupulous sand traders.

No effective step is taken to prevent erosion by the government. In some places, geo-bags were dumped. But these are not working.

In the last one era, homes and croplands of over 1,000 families were eroded due to erosion. Some of them took shelter on flood protection embankment. At the same time, the flood embankment was hit by erosion while different religious institutions were devoured.

At present, hundreds of families are under erosion threat. Erosions are continuing in Sit Jamuda (Munsipara), Uttar Bhangamor (Kutipara), Jamudanga, Tunirchar and more other places.

Besides, Chanderbazar, Mahishbandi, Chhota Dawdpur, Hamindpur, and Sreerampur villages, river bank living families are passing sleepless nights.

Dwellers of Uttar Bhangamor area Ful Mia,  Baki Mia and others said, a turn of the river has been created in this Mouja; it is halting the water flow; several homes and croplands are disappearing; if the direction of the river is made straight by loop cutting, crops will be protected.

He said, they have applied to Upazila Nirbahi Officer in this regard.

A dweller of Patillakura-Chakdaria Village Khsrip Uddin said, his house was eroded several years back; after losing his only house, he is now staying at the house of his brother.

In fear of disappearance of home and land, Lal Mia, Azizar and Neel Mia of Sit Jamudanga Village are passing sleepless nights.

Another Prafulla Chandra said, earlier the river was straight; but recently it has created turn after turn; the erosion is increasing due to machine-based sand lifting.

Damodpur Union Chairman Jahangir Alam said, he has discussed the Ghaghat River issue at the Upazila Parishad meeting. Erosion prevention work has started at different points.

Again eroded areas will be inspected, said WDBs Executive Engineer Hafizul Haq.
