Heaps of garbage along Santhia highway creates public sufferings

SANTHIA, PABNA, July 26: Heaps of garbage are created along both sides of Pabna-Bogura highway in Santhia Upazila of the district, spreading foul smells around and getting pedestrians to health risk.

Locals complained, due to apathy by the authorities concerned, and in the absence of monitoring, pedestrians and transport passengers are suffering.

Garbage of fruit shops, haat-bazaars, hotel and Karamja Rishipapa leather traders are dumped by van, Nasimon and Karimon.
For the last 4-5 years, this reckless garbage dumping has been continuing along about one kilometre stretch of the highway including the west side of Basundhara Gas Pump in Amaikola area.

School-college students and regular pedestrians pass this area by covering their noses with handkerchiefs.

Vitapara Village dwellers Sohel Rana, Aynal Haq, Farid Ahmed, Dulal, Saiful and others said, "It has been difficult for us to reside due to foul smells of garbage."

A van driver of Sharisha Village Abdul Matin said, "Our passengers including students get suffocated due to foul smells."
Students Sirajul, Halim, and Monir  of Bera B B Pilot High School said, " We have to cover our noses for going to school."
Some HSC examinees said, "We are going to attend exams facing serious sufferings."

An inspector of the Department of Environment Nazrul Islam said, "I did not get any specific complaint; if get, measures will be taken."

Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr Abdul Matin said, garbage of the highway sides is going to river or ditch. If people take bath in these water bodies, they can be affected by different virus and skin disease, he added.

Sub-Assistant Engineer of Roads and Highways Department-Pabna Mahbubur Rahman said, "We issued notices to traders of haats and bazaars for not dumping garbage along the highway sides; even we hanged signboard; despite that it is going on."

When  executive engineer will come from training, stern action will be taken against the persons who are dumping garbage, he added.

Upazila Nirtbahi Officer (UNO) Jahidul Islam said, after knowing about the dumpers necessary legal measures will be taken, the UNO added.
