RANINAGAR, NAOGAON, Oct 29: Cattle feed crisis has been severe in Raninagar Upazila of the district.
According to sources, the price of straw, staple feed for cattle, has been severe in the upazila due to its increasing demand. Farmers are hiccupping to purchase straw.

At present, they are purchasing raw grass, mustard cake and bran at higher prices.
Cattle cannot be grazed in fields which are full of transplanted Aman crop. So, cattle owners are purchasing raw grass, mustard cake and bran from markets.

It was learnt, there are 39 registered cattle farms by the Department of Live Stock Service (DoLS) in eight unions of the upazila. Besides, there are many cattle at the individual level.

According to DoLS sources, there are about 55,000 cattle in the upazila. At the marginal farmers' level, there are about 11,000 goats.

A farm owner of Bhabanipur Village Midul Hasan said, "Along with agriculture, I rear 10 cows yearly. It has been difficult to keep my farm due to increased feed prices."

Upazila DoLS officer Dr Md Rafi  Faisal Talukdar said, "As there is feed crisis, farm owners can feed their cows raw grass. But grass needs to be of rich species. They are advised in this connection."
