Thrust on ending violence against women

The Ministry of Women and Children Affairs (MoWCA) on Wednesday at a press conference held at the Bangladesh Shishu Academy highlighted the ongoing 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, emphasizing the collective efforts needed to combat violence against women and girls. 

The event aligns with the international campaign running from November 25 to December 10, 2024.

Sharmin S Murshid, Women and Children Affairs Adviser, called for revising current strategies to address the persistent issue of gender-based violence (GBV). 

She emphasized the importance of creating stable, specialized teams within the ministry, comprising gender experts and sociologists, to ensure effective implementation and continuity in combating GBV. 

Sharmin urged the media to amplify awareness and mobilize public support for the campaign, stating, "With joint efforts, Bangladesh can become free from violence and discrimination against women and girls."

Key participants included Senior Secretary Momtaz Ahmed, Director General of the Directorate of Women Affairs Keya Khan, and other senior officials. The global theme for 2024 is "Towards Beijing +30: Unite to End Violence Against Women and Girls", while the national theme is "Protect Women and Girls, Build a World Free of Violence."

She said that at the field level, she emphasized on the implementation of the activities planned to celebrate the 16-day International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and where there are shortcomings. 

Notable activities on the occasion of the 16-day International Day for the prevention of violence against women are  nationwide dialogues, workshops, and seminars to address gender-based violence, campaigns through media and mobile networks to raise awareness, public pledges in educational institutions to prevent violence, special advocacy efforts involving religious leaders and Friday sermons,  initiatives for ensuring women-friendly environments in public spaces, workplaces, and transport, cultural programmes, art exhibitions, and youth-driven community campaigns.
