10 lakh people suffer for lack of bridge over Ramnabad River

GALACHIPA, PATUAKHALI, Dec 26: The absence of a bridge over the Ramnabad River is causing communication suffering to 10 lakh people of three upazilas including Galachipa in the district.

During the Awami League rule, a project was approved at the ECNEC meeting. The project was named Galachipa Bridge. 
The construction cost of the revised project was fixed at Tk 521 crore. It was supposed to be implemented by the Roads and Highways Department.

Passing this river by ferries, over 100 vehicles go to the district, division, Dhaka and other parts of the country daily. 

The construction was supposed to be implemented from January 2003 to December 2025. But it was not started.

Taking trouble 10 lakh people of three upazilas including Rangabali and Dashmina upazilas are passing the river by ferries.

A truck driver Sohag said, "We have been hearing about the Galachipa Bridge for 30 years. But we see no work. We have to wait for hours for ferry."

Hafiz Master, convener of Gona Adhikar Parishad-Galachipa  Upazila, said, "Our long dream is going to come true; the bridge will be built; the work will be started soon."

Lecturer Yahia Khan, member of Jamaat-E-Islami Bangladesh, said, "Your demand for the Galachipa Bridge is very important and public-oriented."

Upazila BNP President Md Siddiqir Rahman said, this bridge is the demand of lakhs of people; they want the bridge work to start soon.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mizanur Rahman said, this bridge will reduce public sufferings in three upazilas; it has been approved.

After the construction of the bridge, communications of these upazilas will become very easy with all divisions  including Dhaka, he added.  
  
UNO further said, also there will be opportunities for boosting local economic resources.
