At least 15 individuals were injured in a clash between supporters of BNP alliance candidate Nurul Haque Nur and “rebel” contender Hasan Mamun in Galachipa upazila of Patuakhali district on Saturday night.

The incident occurred around 11:00 PM in front of Chatra Government Primary School-3 in Dakuya union under the Patuakhali-3 (Galachipa–Dashmina) constituency.

According to local sources, tensions erupted when supporters of Hasan Mamun, campaigning under the “Horse” symbol, brought out a procession in Dakuya area.

At the same time, activists backing Nurul Haque Nur, who is contesting with “Truck” symbol, were present nearby. An altercation soon escalated into violence, leaving activists from both sides injured.

Chhatra Odhikar Parishad central president and Nurul Haque Nur’s election management committee coordinator Md Abu Nayeem alleged that Mamun’s supporters initiated the attack after noticing they were outnumbered.

Seven to eight supporters of the “Truck” symbol, including Altaf Pyada, Firoz Khan and Mahatab Khan, were injured and later given first aid, he said.

However, Hasan Mamun’s supporter Md Maruf claimed that their procession was blocked by Nur’s supporters, who then attacked them with sticks.

He also said that seven to eight of their men were injured, and two—Zayed Mahmud Saad and Md Wazib Hawlader—were admitted to Galachipa Upazila Health Complex for better treatment.

Galachipa Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Zillur Rahman confirmed the incident and said that they brought the situation under control.

Further steps would be taken if complaints are filed, added the OC.
