BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has vacated the Bogura-6 parliamentary seat ahead of his oath as a member of parliament from Dhaka-17, scheduled for today (Tuesday).

Under the Representation of the People Order, an individual may contest elections in up to three constituencies, but the Constitution allows a member of parliament to represent only a single seat.

On Monday, Tarique Rahman sent a letter to the Election Commission regarding the vacancy, confirmed EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed. He added that the commission will now initiate the process of issuing a gazette notification declaring the seat vacant, after which the schedule for a by-election will be announced.

Tarique Rahman was elected from both Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6 constituencies in the 13th national parliamentary election held on February 12. As his party BNP won a landslide victory in the national election he is going to take oath today as country's first male Prime Minister after 1991.
